Handbook Forest and Water

Handbook Forest & Water

Forest and Water are closely interwoven areas, which consists of many layers and affects many areas of forestal work. Due to the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) it has gained more importance. The implementation of the WFD is leading to many questions and hopes, even in the field of forestry. This Handbook on Forest and Water shall present the importance and effects of the WFD on forest management. As a practical guideline it shall support those who implement the WFD with direct or indirect measures in the forest.

INTERREG-Project

The handbook is based in a large part on an INTERREG-project, which was realised in cooperation with the Forest Research Institute of Baden-Württemberg (FVA, Germany) with the Office National des Forêts (ONF, France) and the canton Jura (Switzerland). The project put its emphasis on questions of interactions between forest management and the state of water bodies in low mountain ranges.

Part 1 mainly gives background information on forest and water. Part 2 deals with practical implementation aspects.

Alder Forests and Alder-Ash Forests in Montane Areas of the Vosges and the Alsatian Jura Alder Forests and Alder-Ash Forests in Montane Areas of the Vosges and the Alsatian Jura

Alder and Ash-alder forest communities in the Vosges: their ecological function and threats from human influence. This article from the ONF contains recommendations to manage these forests.

Ecological function of small watercourses Ecological function of small watercourses

Questioning the function and value of small watercourses opens up a minefield. This article deals with two basic questions: how do current, structure and communities interrelate to create diverse watercourses and what functions of small watercourses are perceivable in the landscape?

Influence of Forest Management on Water Quality Influence of Forest Management on Water Quality

Forest management measures have greater or lesser influences on the water quality of forest streams. Using four different case studies this interrelationship is examined and forestry options to guide water quality are derived.

A) Survey of the State of Forest Streams

B) Implementation of the WFD in Forest Lands

C) Costs of the Implementation of the WFD in the Forest

Economical Value of Loss of Use Economical Value of Loss of Use

Implementing the WFD can lead to forest management restrictions and thereby a yield loss for the forest owner. The FVA has developed a web based calculating tool that enables yield loss calculations.
