Implementation Examples in France and Germany

Many pilot projects were carried out by the ONF and FVA as implementation measures of the WFD. They encompass the areas of "silvicluture measures along a watercourse, passability measures and application of PEHD pipes as temporary river crossings". The examples are described in the following leaflets, split according to country.

Examples from Baden-Württemberg

Silviculture measures along watercourses

Various silviculture measures which were carried out in forest stands along streams in water catchments of the Menzenschwander Alps and Southern Blackforest are introduced. For historical use reasons, spruce is the dominant tree species along the streams (proportion between 60 and 100%). The development goal is to bring about a change in the tree species composition through silviculture methods thereby recreating the "good ecological condition" of watercourses in the sense of the Water Framework Directive of the European Union.

Passability Measures

Invert drops in height and impassable concrete pipes at road crossings were replaced with various constructions. The measures were carried out on different streams near Nürtingen and at Feldberg between 2005 and 2007.

Examples from France

Restoration of wind throw areas along a watercourse

Riparian wind throw areas along the Moos stream in the Northern Vosges were restored to a semi-natural forest condition. Emerging naturally regenerating conifers were suppressed generating planting situations for alder and broadleaved trees. The experiences and recommendations of these measures are explained in a leaflet.

Passability Measures

Various measures to allow aquatic animal passage were carried out in three small rivers in the Vosges. The experiences and recommendations of these applications are explained in a joint leaflet.

Application of PEHD-Pipes as temporary river crossings

PEHD pipes serve as temporary crossings at small rivers during forest harvesting. They were tested by the ONF in several situations. The experiences and recommendations of this application is explained in a leaflet.
